Paul Dorgan

French specialist, vocal coach


Born in Ireland, Paul Dorgan moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies at the Ohio State University, which awarded him a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. He also studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and holds degrees from the Royal Academy of Music and from Trinity College of Music, both in London.

 

His musical career has always involved working with singers, whether coaching them, accompanying them in recitals, or serving as an assistant to conductors in opera companies in Ireland and in America. He was on the music staff of Cincinnati Opera for seven years and spent two years in residence with the Virginia Opera; at Utah Opera he established its Young Artist Program and its Studio Artist program. Other companies he has worked with include L'Opéra du Montréal, Opera Columbus, Atlanta Opera and Opera Memphis.

 

He has accompanied singers in his native Dublin; at the Puccini Festival in Italy; in Paris; in London; in Switzerland, and in numerous recitals throughout the United States. In 2001 he was invited to Tampa by Maestro Anton Coppola to assist him in the world première of his opera Sacco and Vanzetti, and has returned to the company many times since then.

 

He has served on the faculty at the Summer Academy of the Bern Opera in Switzerland, and on the University of Toronto's COSI program in Italy; in July, 2013, he participated in the first FIOAmericas in Campinas, Brazil.

 

He has published many articles on operatic topics, and many opera companies use his supertitle translations. He has adjudicated for the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and for the National Association of Teachers of Singing; he lectures and presents master classes for singer and accompanists throughout the United States. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Utah Metropolitan Opera National Council , and on the Board of the Utah Youth Orchestras and Ensembles. Currently Paul Dorgan is a Lecturer in Music at the University of Utah.
